Proclivity to Create

It’s not everyday I intentionally suit up to paint, draw or develop skills.

It’s not everyday I hunker down in my studio with a wild inspired wind blowing through, paired with the element of having no where to be, that leaves me surrounded with fresh colorful art.

It’s not everyday that I’m able to make something tangible to offer this world to hang on their walls.

It’s not everyday.

What I do find daily is the proclivity to create.

A hard-wired bent to make something new, start something fresh.. Heck- just bring a freshness somewhere, anywhere.

I’m talking a strong orientation towards it.
A built in proclivity.

Sometimes that craving to create comes with potent inspiration.

Sometimes the motivation to create is absent, so I go to my game-plan of telling myself to “Suit up and Show up.” More times than not that starting action reaps motivation.

However, when I pay attention I recognize creativity in many guises.

Ones that don’t scream CREATIVITY.

Just today I had a quick picture of the girl’s lunch boxes filled with colorful food…. I wound up at the market today and it’s all in the fridge now.

Another day I pulled out my favorite cookie recipe and found myself baking up a batch.

(It must be lunch time because both of those examples are food related)

There are so many ways creativity just happens.

How about this one: I set the most darling little lamp right there on my washer and dryer -  making the least cozy spot in the house, a contender. The most consistently laborious place in my house is now a place of restfulness. I can’t explain it but when I turn on that little lamp - I’m ready to fold. It's not science, it's creativity. Maybe even a miracle.

Do you feel this bent? Do you notice a proclivity to create?

A sure fire way I feel inspiration of creativity is drumming up ways to connect with specific people. Even initiating an “I’m sorry” is hard, but the fruit is so good. Writing a letter. Tying a ribbon around a gift or anything for that matter.

Here’s creativity too..

You know the days where you feel all that urgency to do do do with nothing that actually needs to be done-- there’s an art to establishing restfulness in the midst of that urgency. An art to generate ideas to resist it.

On the flip side there is an art to suiting up and showing up when giving weight to something is called for.

Creating can be planting seeds, baking, planning adventures, connecting, sitting down to imagine with a child, hospitality, writing, teaching, guidance, cleaning out or curating, bringing order or bringing spontaneity, showing grace, saying sorry, appreciating creativity, paying attention to small things, constructing systems and procedures, developing a team, designing play spaces for littles, delicately constructing timely words to spark hope, individualizing gifts, extending comfort, extending a good kick in the pants.

It can be a sudden burst or it can be a slow one-step-in-front-of-the-other expression.

While I’ve been writing this, I felt I needed to figure out a way to tie this all together somehow. As if to validate it can only happen with a tangible product, a moral, some concrete thought....

Nah.

This journal post was the expression.

The expression of that embedded proclivity to create.

What ways do you find yourself creating?
